Dear Shalori,
In the aftermath of the South African (Boer) War there were many
Volunteer units to supplement the Regular units in existence. The Royal
Artillery had Field Guns, Siege Guns, Horse Artillery and Garrison
Artillery. The City of London is a just a square mile in central London
and many units recruited there.
I suspect that his rank was most likely the bottom one Gunner and his
job was a gun layer. The Royal Artillery have in May 2001 just opened a
new museum in Woolwich Arsenal in South London, it is called Firepower
and you can see their web-site under that name. They have a research
facility.
There may be other records at the Public Record Office at Kew. Depends
if he qualified for either of the Boer War Medals (service before 1901 -
Queens S. A. Medal, after that Kings S. A Medal). Some have both. There
are medal rolls there and you can download information from their web-
site.
Best of luck,
Fred.
