I had a proble of this kind - due to an internal fault rather than a virus.

Fortunately about a year ago I "invested" in a rewritable cd-rom drive, and
had used it to back up most of my data. I did lose some, but have been able
to reconstruct the bits that really matter

Since that episode, I have taken to using the "backup" files on my cd-rom as
the "working" ones, and saving my data to there rather than the hard drive. I
don't know if there are any disadvantages to this, or indeed any viruses that
can attack the cd-rom as well as the hard drive to which they are downloaded
- but it seems like a useful way of safeguarding myself. I would welcome any
comments
