It appears that the Maypole, just over there from whence I type, was a pub
called the King's Head up until the mid 1890's that had a May Pole either in
it's grounds or nearby. It was variously listed under the names of the KH and
the Maypole up until that point, but seems to have been renamed then to avoid
the confusion. But I suppose it may have gone by the sign of the Maypole way
back yonder in 1777 (I want that map!). It's now a Chinese restaurant and is,
and probably was back then, on the junctions of the Colchester, Messing and
Oak roads.
