Hello again Jill, thanks for replying and for your offer of help.
We don't know whether my ggrandfather John DOWNES was a lifeboatman, whether
working on the lifeboat or just a bystander. He died on 11.12.1892 from
'exhaustion due to injuries received by falling under the Walton lifeboat'.
It's interesting that the death cert. says 'under the lifeboat' which would
point to the fact that it was being launched at the time.
However, this would appear to be before the records you have. I've written
to two Essex newspapers in the hope that the incident may've been recorded
and archived but have had no reply as yet. I know there is a Walton
Historical Society and I'm hoping to find out their whereabouts. Last
resort is a trip to Walton to visit the lifeboat museum and try to find a
