Subject: Maritime Query plus looking for WOOLF, LOCKWOOD, CLARKE and MILLS.

Dear Listers,
I have recently joined the Essex List and have followed recent sea-faring correspondence with interest. I have 2 questions. Firstly, one of my ancestors was variously described on certificates of birth and mariage as a:
a) mariner
b) seaman
c) sailor.
Do all these Victorian occupations amount to the same thing ? Or would "mariner" for instance indicate the Royal Navy ?
Secondly, any clues as to how I might locate him on a census ? I've found his family in each census, but not him.
My Essex interests are:
WOOLF - Stambridge, Burnham on Crouch and Paglesham 1750 - 1870
LOCKWOOD - Stambridge 1750 - 1800
MILLS - Paglesham 1800 - 1850
CLARKE - Canewdon 1850 - 1875
WOOLF and CLARKE - Bethnal Green 1870 - 1875
Regards,
David, Hampshire.
