This was the Chelmsford Union Workhouse located in Barrack Lane. The present day St. Johns maternity hospital now occupies the site and the street has been renamed Wood Street.
Its 1851 census records actually comprise folios 522 to 530
The 1851 census recorded:
Total Paupers 195 male, 121 female.
Officers Male 4, Female 5.
In Officers families 2 Male, 2 Female.
There was a mixture of ages for both sexes, but older men did predominate.
