Hi All
Gusted Hall was looking just fine three years ago when I last visited
England. I took a walk past it on the footpath that goes from Hockley Wood
to Gusted Hall Wood. (I didn't meet Mal Pace or Ian Hunter enroute, but I
did also walk past Mal's old house and Hockley Church.)
Gusted Hall looked to be in great shape, excellent landscaping
and well maintained. It is in a wonderful location at the top of a hill with
woods on two sides and fields on the other. As it is in a green belt area it
seems very remote from the extensive development that has taken place in all
surrounding areas.
I used to live at the foot of Gusted Hall Lane when I was very very
young. In those days my family used to take walks quite frequently,
accompanied by our cat "Ginger", around Gusted Hall vicinity & in Gusted
Hall Woods. I went to functions at the Hall, and participated in at least
one
birthday party there. Unfortunately, I was so young that I cannot tell
you the name of the family who lived there then. I'm sure that is what you
really
want to know .
Also, I regret to say that I cannot provide you with any information
about the history of Gusted Hall. In the book "Hockley, Hullbridge &
Hawkwell Past" by Lesley Vingoe, published by Phillimore & Co, 1999, there
are only 2 references to Gusted Hall Woods (pages 25 & 28) and no references
at all to Gusted Hall itself. It says on page 28, that Gusted Hall Wood was
first mentioned in 1450 as Gristedwode. Curiously, Bullwood Hall, Clements
Hall, Hockley Hall, & Little Hockley Hall are all described in some detail,
but there is not even a mention of Gusted Hall. However, Gusted Hall does
appear on the Chapman & Andre's 1777 map of Hockley, Hawkwell & Hullbridge
area, which is on page xi, in the Introduction.
If anyone out there has a greater knowledge of the history of this
area, I
am also interested in finding out more about Gusted Hall, as well as
Clements Hall, Lincoln House, Pulpits Farm and the families below.
