I have to admit to being one of the lucky ones amid all the gloomy stories!!
When I was in England a couple of years ago, my aunt who was then 82 but
very mentally alert, handed me most of the family memorabilia that she had
as neither of her sons, my cousins, were interested. This included an
exercise book that my g.grandfather had written poems and doggerels
(spelling?) in during his life, some most amusing and clever. One though
was of great interest, he had written a poem on the death of his father in
1875, (my g.g.grandfather who was born in 1792), and gave a great thumbnail
sketch of him, I could see him in my minds eye, it told me that he played
the violin, loved his grandchildren, went to church, what he looked like to
a certain degree, and hinted at past troubles which really whetted my
appetite!!
She also had a water colour painting of my g.g.grandmother (different line)
painted in 1838 when she was 21. When I was leaving she gave me several
parcels to bring back for Christmas presents to the family, when I opened
mine on Christmas Day, there was Amelia Jane Rice in all her glory; I
cried, I was so thrilled, now she is beautifully framed and has pride of
place.
So, there are some that DO keep all these wonderful things. I might add
that I also was given some great photos and other things, like the silver
buckle from my grandmother's belt and my g.grandmother's drawers!!!!!!!!!!
(knickers to the uninitiated!!)
Hope I haven't made anyone too envious!!!
