The only 1851 censuses that are on disc are for Norfolk, Warwickshire and
Devon, they were done as an experiement leading up to doing the 1881 census.
There is an almost complete index of the 1851 census for Essex available on
fiche, there are some missing as these were lost by fire. The index gives
names and places etc. Films of original censuses from 1841 (the first
national census) to 1891 can be hired through an LDS family history centre
for a month at a cheap rate. Censuses in Britain are kept sealed for 100
years, so we are all waiting for the 1901 one to be released on the 1st Jan.
2002. I believe this will be online, but there will be a charge for using
it.
