Subject: Which Steward?
Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 23:26:35 +0100
Hello everyone
Well, Essex comes up trumps again. I thought it such a little question
"What is a Steward?" The response, as ever, has been remarkable. Thank
you very much to everyone who took an interest and if I haven't replied
personally please take this message as being such.
My question is extended slightly because there are many types of
Steward. Was my Charles PLUMB a Steward of an Estate, a Steward on a
ship/private yacht (as somebody's ancestor was) or what?
I have, possibly, one more clue. His daughter had to make "her mark" in
the marriage register (she was 16yrs). In the List's opinion does this
sound like the daughter of somebody with an important job like a Steward
of an Estate? My feeling is that someone in this position would be
educated and so would their children but I may be wrong (I usually am).
I await to be bowled over in the rush of answers which I know from
experience I'll get!
regards, Jan Trory
