Cheapest way is to to try the registration district holding the records for
Manchester - see :
http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/blangston/genuki/reg/
for registration districts and towns & villages in each district/

No. I have an 1842 marriage certificate. It contains the same information
as a 20th century certificate. Date, Names, Ages (if you're unlucky it will
simply say full age), condition, rank/profession, residence at time of
marriage (could be Essex but unlikely if the marriage was in Manchester),
father's name and father's occupation.

You say they arrived in Australia in 1853. Do you know where they were in
1851? If so try the '51 census return for that place. You will get a place
of birth from the entry there.
