Hi there,
I was wondering if there is anyone out there at all interested in the
research of the families of Clark/Matthams from the Essex district.
My elderly aunt passed away some 4 years ago, after very relunctantly
giving me some very sketchy snippets of her family.
She was actually born in Maldon Essex, as were some of her brothers and
sisters.
My mothers maiden name was Frances Annetta Ward, and her father was
William Thomas Ward,
Born in 1888, married Nellie Matthams(born 1889 Maldon Essex) in 1909
Nellie Matthams parents were Susanna Clark born 1850 (Tollesbury?) and
Joseph Matthams born 1847. (Commonly known as Holy Joe the painter).
They were married in 1877, both for the second time.
In the 1881 census the children were listed as
Albert Matthams born 1871 Edward Clerk born 1872
Lilie Matthams born 1873 John Clark born 1875
Ethel Matthams born born 1879 William Matthams born 1880
George Matthams born 1881
in the 1891 census some of the children had probably moved away and the
list was as follows
John Clark age 16 (born 1871) Ethel Matthams age 12 (born 1879)
William J Matthams age 11 (born 1880)Walter Matthams age 7 (born 1884)
Agnes Matthams age 5 (born 1886) Frances Matthams age 3 (born 1888)
Nellie Matthams age 1 (born 1889)
That is as far as I have been able to go.
Joseph Matthams father was James Matthams born 1796/1798? married Mary
Kemp born 1799/1806? and married on 26.6.1826
1841 Census shows HO/107/345 Maldon St Peter
James Matthams age 45 Ostler (Born in County)Y Est DOB 1796
Mary Matthams age 40 " " " 1806
Henry Matthams age 14 " " " 1827
Mary Matthams age 12 " " " 1829
James Matthams age 9 " " " 1832

Mary Matthams " " " " 1799 52
James Matthams " " " " 1832 19
Joseph Matthams Gt.Totham " " 1846 5
I was told that James Matthams died at sea and his wife died in
childbirth.
Susanna Clark was from Tollesbury and the 1881 census shows
Census Place Tollesbury
Susan Clark age 57 Head of family.
Alfred Clark age 15 Son.
I realise that I have written a lot of information about my research
but I just hoped that by giving all the details that I have given, some
one, somewhere, just might be a relative of mine, and if so, I would
dearly like to know about them. I am not interested in skeletons in
cupsboards, I do not wear a halo, or ever intend to do so. I am just
very interested in my family, having been brought up as an only child,
only to find at the age of 46, that I have brothers and a sister. Wow.
Wonderful. Since 1980 when I found them, we are in touch all the time.
They are scattered all over the world, UK,NZ, W.Aust. and Victoria,
Aust.
Well worth all the time, effort, frustrations and what ever.
Many thanks in anticipation to any and every one who may be interested
or have a link. Good luck to you all, Kindest regards, Una,
W.Australia
