Thanks very much, April. I found two Thomas Priske names born in
Cornwall around 1854, which is his approximate date of birth. I
will have to track these two down to see if either of them are the
correct one. I was hoping to do that without purchasing birth
certificates, so will do a bit more searching to find out what I can
for those two.
I did reseach the Register of Mariners through Guildhall and received
a response from a librarian that there was a Thomas Priske, Captain,
with a lengthy record. Again I need to determine if that is the
correct person, as without a middle name you are never sure. There
are a lot of Priske/Prisk people worldwide, but not that many. I
have been to the Prisk web site and can find no records there either.
My best bet, I think, at this point is to go further into the records
at Guildhall via a local researcher and also to see which Thomas in
Cornwall may be my ancestor.
There are always the brick walls, but I would like to find out if
there ever was a marriage to my grandfather's mother, Julia
Greenfield, but I am beginning to think there was no marriage, even
though on his birth certificate the father's name is Thomas Montague
Priske and the mother's name is Julia Caroline Priske. That is
where my research stalls, I can't find Thomas's records nor the
record of any marriage between these two. And of course the birth
certificate is in a different county and no reference at all to
Victoria Docks. Victoria Docks pops up with the marriage to
Elizabeth Page and then he is gone again.
I do appreciate your help and if I can ever be of help with any of
your Canadian ancestors, let me know. Having a person "on the
ground" sometimes helps, but then Canada is a very large area and
most "older" research is in Ontario/Quebec and I am on the west coast
in British Columbia.
