Subject: [EOLFHS-MEMBERS] 1837 BMD Register
Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2008 12:57:04 -0500

Can someone confirm the following facts for me. This information was passed to me via another member of my family research group.
I had never seen this information before.

"When the BMD Register was set up in 1837 there was a requirement to make returns within 42 days. Failure to do so was not
penalised. However, by the 1880's a financial penalty was introduced to ensure that all BMD were registered in good time".

All the follow facts fit well within this family's profile. In the parish records we have a birth Aug 15 1887 & a baptism Sep 7 1887.
However, under where & when born on the birth certificate we have born September 5 1887.
The birth was registered October 18 1887.

Was this a typical "illiterate" error on the part of the mother or have anyone else found similar discrepancies in their birth certs?
