Hi Lorraine
Sadly we all eventually reach a brick wall! As I understand it the censuses
begin in 1841 and only a few earlier examples exist. You then have to look
for other "proof' such as the 1803 Militia List, Parish records, Land
Titles, Criminal Offences, Wills, Emigration records, Military Records or
the like.
The dates from Parish registers are likely to be baptism rather than birth
dates unless you are very lucky and the Minister has recorded both.
Our "olds" were a lot more mobile than the old genealogy books suggest
unfortunately!
I;d suggest you need to find them in 1851 and 1841 if you have 1861. That at
least would get you back another 20 years.
Happy hunting
Marlene
