Hi Christine (and List)
thanks you for your two responses.
2. Noah & Enoch
Well, it looks like none of the four are mine. I'm looking for yet
another Noah PORTER and another Enoch PORTER whose parents are Edwin
and Susannah.

1. Census data.
I did locate the 1861 entry but was less certain that this was my man.
It has given rise to more questions than answers and I will write more
when I have done more research. I only have access through the NSW
State Library subscription to ancestry.com when I visit.
But for now ...
Looks like I have a household in Gospelend st Sedgley headed by a
Thomas SPURRIER in 1841-1861.
In 1841, he appears to be alone.
In 1851, he has a WHALE family boarding and a Peter LAW.
In 1861, he is shown as you say with a Mary & Enoch PORTER.
I wonder, could Mary be his niece and Enoch her son? (Don't worry, I'm
not jumping to conclusions. This is an hypothesis which requires
evidence to disprove or prove.) If not, where is his mother? dead?
elsewhere? (Again with the questions).
The WHALE family - could this be a family which appears in later
Census data as WHEALE? See the 1891 Census, Class: RG12; Piece: 2307;
Folio 20; Page 1; GSU roll: 6097417. This household is headed by Henry
MANVILLE (whom I am identifying as the Henry Stephen MANVILL of the
1871 Census entry which includes the person I believe is my Edwin
PORTER.
