Hello Annette,
It could have been snobbery which made them move. There is a tale in my
family that what prompted my great uncle James STANTON and his wife to leave Lyme
Regis and emigrate to Sydney was the coming of the railway: it brought
undesirables in and out of the town! Of course I don't know how true that might
be. He was from a family of country publicans: his wife, however was the
daughter of an artist who had painted for royalty!
