Exactly as I suspected. :-)

Was John HIGHTON a bachelor or widower at the time of this marriage?
If the former, then everything points to William (born some 6 years earlier)
being an illegitimate child of Catherine DOHERTY. In which case his birth
would either
have been registered as William DOHERTY or (as sometimes happened in cases
of illegitimacy) not registered at all.

Free BMD has these entries, which may or may not be of some relevance :-

SeptemberQ 1864
West Derby 8b/291
William John DOUGHERTY

Death
SeptemberQ 1887
Liverpool 8b/49
William DOUGHERTY, aged 22

This would appear to be the registration of John & Catherine's first child:-

Birth
DecemberQ 1871
Prescot 8b/614
Mary Alice HUYTON

Suggesting that they were still in the Prescot area at the time of the 1871
Census?
