Hi List,
Whilst looking through the burial records for Mere Knolls cemetery in Sunderland, I came across Robert Marley RENDALL who died 1937 at sea. I already knew of this individual who was a gt gt uncle, and decided to check the local newspaper 'just in case' there was a write up / report. Nothing could have prepared me for the detail which I found - so it just goes to show that following up on the side-lines is also a good thing. I've posted the article below for two reasons, just to share the information that may be available and in case anyone else has an interest in this RENDALL family, and also the ROSS family (my main line of research) mentioned as family mourners.

SHIPS MASTER BURIED - Captain Robert RENDALL, of Seaburn
Master Mariners, representatives of shipping firms and freemasons were among the mourners at the funeral today of Captain Robert M RENDALL of Kings Avenue, Seaburn.
Captain RENDALL, who was 74, died suddenly in his bunk on Thursday when his ship was on voyage from London to the North East.
The interment in Mere Knolls Cemetery was preceded by a service in St Andrews Church, Roker, the Rev J L WILSON (vicar) and the Rev S Layton PETRIE (vicar of Holy Trinity, Stockton on Tees and formerly of St Barnabas's, Hendon) officiating. Mr T W WILSON was organist.
Family mourners were Mrs RENDALL (widow); Messrs Thomas, John, Norman and Arthur RENDALL (sons); Mrs R RENDALL (daughter in law); Mr and Mrs WKJ RENDALL (brother and sister - in - law); Mr Arthur RENDALL (brother)' Mrs A ROSS and Mrs T LOVE (sisters); Mrs A S RENDALL (daughter in law)' Miss J CHAPMAN, Mrs Arthur RENDALL (sister in law); Messrs A ROSS, W Stamp and T LOVE (brothers in law); Mrs Charles RENDALL and Mrs E J DUFFY.
Among others present were: Capt C Ward Mr R RICHARDSON, Mr N W DAWSON (STEPHENSON Clarke& Associated Companies, Ltd), Mr E Victor NICHOLSON (Sunderland YMCA), Messrs W T WALLACE and G V WHITE, and Capt J W STEPHENSON (Williamson Lodge of Freemasons), Messrs W J TAIT, and P J BROWN (James Westoll Ltd, owners of the Andelle), Capt W S CALDECOTT, Capt M HENDERSON, Messrs M , J GRAYSTON, M TURNBULL, R G TATE, W J MITCHELL, and Ernest HUTCHINSON.
Floral tributes included those from the Directors and staff of James Westoll Ltd, officers and men of the S S Andelle; Gravesend Pilots, officers and members of St Barnabas's Church, and Williamson Lodge.
INQUEST VERDICT
His son, Norman, who was a donkey man on the ship, gave evidence at the Gateshead inquest yesterday on Captain RENDALL. The verdict was "Death from natural causes."
Norman RENDALL said that on being told his father was ill, he went to his cabin and found him lying on his bunk apparently dead.
Dr W L BROWN said death was due to a spontaneous rupture of the heart muscle, due to fatty degeneration.
