Hello all,
(A note - I tried to send this as a *forward* but RootsWeb kicked it back to
me as "The message you submitted to this list (included above) wasn't sent to
the list subscribers. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail." Boy, talk about
hiccups between systems!)
I am forwarding this with the kind permission of the original poster. She
also told me "you have to have a very specific idea of what you're looking for to
access the documents." But I think we're getting there.
My regards,
David Knowles
Dear Listers, I spent an induction day at Kew yesterday -now known as The
National Archives(Kew).
We spent a lot of time using the website [!] -you can now access individual
documents through the website and you can download them for £3 per document.
You can search for passenger lists and crew lists for ships leaving English
ports including Liverpool.
The World War One Soldiers war records are also searchable. After over an
hour, I drew a blank with my lot though and there weren't many of the records
from Lancashire regiments as far as I could see.
They are also making links with County Record Offices and other document
holders so that you can search directly for local documents through the National
Archive Website.
The website is at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk [go in through 'PRO' -
'Information Leaflets' -'browse']
You can subscribe to a monthly online newsletter.
Happy Hunting!
Ann Marie
