Surname: Eller, Shearer, Oaks, Allen, Jones, Sloan
-------------------------
Consider for the moment while you read this the possibility that your Mary
Eller Shearer, b. 1813 is a sister to Wilkerson Eller and not a daughter.
The information that I have on Wilkerson's immediate family is as follows.
His parents were George Eller, Jr., b. 1782 in VA, d. 1851 in KY and Polly
Oaks. Marriage was in VA. The family moved to Kentucky in 1819. In order
of birth their children were:
1) Henry
2) John
3) Susan
4) Mary
5) Washington, b. 1816, m. to Malinda Jones.
6) Peggy
7) Harrison, b. 23 May 1819 in KY, d. 06 Dec 1884 in Bonham, Fanin, Texas,
m. to Margaret Ann Allen 19 Oct 1843, with children Mary, Julia, George
W., Linda, Florence, and Nancy.
8) Wilkerson, b. in KY, m. to Jane Sloan.
I agree that children were often named after other members of the family.
Your Margaret Ann would be a good example of being named after a favorite
aunt, Harrison's wife. The names Mary and Polly are often interchangeable.
I have at least two other cases where a person was called one at times
and the other at other times. It looks like Polly Oaks may be a similiar
case. She looks to be the elder of the two Mary Eller's you have buried
in Collins County, Texas. It would seem proper for her to go down there
and live with her daughter after her husband dies, especially when her
son lives in the next county. I know of no other names for Jane Sloan.
