I got started on my genealogy when I retired two years ago. I wish I had
started at
22 years old. When my Dad died I found among his things a document on my
great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War. He fought with the Union,
which Dad
told me before he died. He was from Madison County, NC. George M.
Roberts.
When I started my research I found that he first fought with the
Confederacy for about a year (probably conscripted) then joined the
Union armies in 1864, traveling to Knoxville to do so. Since that time I
have read several secondary sources on the Civil War and
NC and found that this was not atypical, particularly for the counties
that bordered E.TN,
where there was a lot of Union sentiment. Since that time I have been
searching for the
father of George M. Roberts, whose name is Jacob Roberts (I think).. It
was his son, Zebulon Vance Roberts (named after a Confederate governor)
who married into the Eller line (Susie, for whom I am named). Any help
with my search will be appreciated it.
