Subject: [ELLER-L] looking for census stories...not a lookup request
Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 15:19:29 -0800 (PST)

Hello everyone. First off, I apologize for sending this to so many lists at
once. I didn't want to have to retype this out and send it to each list
seperately, especially since I have a disconnected finger:). Second, let me
tell you what I'm looking for and why. I am looking for any stories that
any of you can share with me, good and bad, about you experience with using
the census for genealogy research. This could be anything, an example could
be hunting for an ancestor when the name was misspelled. The reason I'm
looking for this is because I have a 25-50 page paper in a history class
entitled "Historian's Craft" which is aiming at teaching us how to be
historian's (this class is only for history majors like myself). With this
paper, we can choose any topic we want and I chose to do mine on the pros
and cons of census data for genealogy. I already have plenty of data as far
as cold hard facts are concerned and what I don't have yet, I can still get.
My professor wants us to bring the human side out in our papers and I would
like to add personal stories to my paper of sucess or otherwise with using
the census. Any info you give will be helpful. I do have a few specifics
if you would like to help me. First, please give me your first and last
names for quoting and bilbliographical purposes. Also, please be as
specific as can be about which census you used. For instance say "the 1860
census of Cabarrus Co., NC" vs. "1860 census of NC", if you don't have the
exact county, make an educated guess, but point out that it is a guess.
Thank you in advance to all those who wish to help me. Good luck in your
research.
