General James Davis was appointed by Houston to protect the Coushatta
Indians during Texas' fight for Independence. Davis was formerly a Sheriff
from Alabama and a good friend of Houston's. So Davis established a
"reservation" north of Livingston coincidently where part of his expansive
plantation was. The reservation is still there today, I believe.
