Subject: widow applications
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 22:17:56 -0600
I found the following article in a July 1917 Rains County Leader; this
is the first I've ever heard of such an application. Does anyone know
if these applications were stored with the state or in the county where
they were filed?
"Blanks are ready upon which applications may be made for mothers
pensions in this state. The law provides that any widow who is the
mother of a child or children under 16 years old and is unable to
support them and to maintain her home may present a peititon for
assistance to the County CommissionersÂ’ Court. This petition to be
verified shall set forth the following : Her name, date of husbandÂ’s
death, names of children, dates and places of their births and
place of her marriage, her residence and length of residence in the
state, the length of time she has lived at present residence and dress
of her places of abode for 5 years, with dates as near as possible
when she moved to and from the various places. A statement of all
property belonging to her and each of the children, including any
future or contingent interest. A statement of her efforts to support
her children. A statement of names and relationship of all relatives of
herself and husband whom she may know."
