Hi Everybody,
We just tried to send this message to Jenny WILMSHURST, who had been a
subscriber to this list, but her private e-mail address seems to have
changed and it was returned user unknown..We are sending this via the list
in the hope that someone might know her new contact address and be able to
advice us, or if she is still a subscriber, that she will see it..
Hi Jenny,
While browsing the archives of the Dumfries Galloway List for CARMONT or
CAVEN postings, we came across your e-mail dated 30 March 2000 regards Rigg/
Mc Cartney.
I was very interested in this, because I descend from John CARMONT &
Elizabeth CAVEN who married in Buittle on 5 Oct 1826, through their son
Allan CARMONT..
John & Elizabeth are also the parents of the Agnes, Catherine & Margaret
CARMONT that were mentioned in the will document of Dr JOHN McCARTNEY ALLAN.
Now, A query that you might be able to help with.
You list a Dr John McCartney ALLAN, and that parts of his will document were
made prior to his death in 1829 and that it lists numerous of his cousins.
Agnes, Catherine & Margaret being amongst them.
I have a document here, about Agnes CARMONT, that lists her as Agnes
CARMONT, born in 1829, in Castle Douglas, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, where her
parents were substanstial farmers. She was brought up mainly in the
house-hold of her Uncle, Dr McCARTHNEY of Glasgow, and from child-hood
assisted him in his dispensarty, thereby gaining a knowledge in medicine.
As she grew up, she heard stories about New Zealand and longed to visit this
country.
In 1850, she got the opportunity when she applied to be a companion to
accompany the young wife of Mr Charles CLIFFORD (later Sir Charles) to NZ
for a period of 3 years, where, at the time, CLIFFORD with two of his
cousins held large areas of land in the Waiarapa and Malborough districts.
Agnes's family did not like the idea of her shifting so far away but after
she completed her 3 year term with the Cliffords, she met and married a
Hector McDONALD and settled in NZ. By this time, the rest of the CARMONT
family had also emigrated to NZ as well, and settled in the Wellington area
before speading out from there.
Now Jenny, As yet,I dont have any information of her Uncle, Dr JOHN
McCARTHNEY of Glasgow, and you list a Dr JOHN McCARTNEY ALLAN, as her
cousin. What is the connection between these two, if any. Are they different
people? Was my G G Grandfather, Allan CARMONT, named after the ALLAN family
?.
Also was parts of Dr John McCartney ALLAN's document written prior to 1829,
or, prior to his death in 1829.
Any help you could offer on these queries would be much appreciated.
Regards, Sheena
