This is my first inquiry:
My grandfather, Mathias Sagartz, (b-1888) was from Nitzkydorf. In the
US, he
married Anna Rastadter (b-1894) who was, I believe, from Bakawa.
Grandma
Sagartz had a brother, Mathias Rastadter, who served in the Hungarian
Army in
WW1 He never returned from the war. Grandma said that he died but
didn't know
(or tell) the circumstances. We do know that he was in a Russian POW
camp in
Siberia. While in the camp, he kept a journal (very touching
entries). It was
written in Gothic script so difficult that the translation service had
to send
it to Germany to be "deciphered". His last entry was on November
20th, 1916.
How and where he died we don't know. I've tried to access the
Hungarian army
rosters without success. Uncle Mathias was a master builder before
the war.
Is there any way to get to the records of the Hungarian army during
the war
years? I believe that the Russian army mutinied late in the war and
wonder
whether Uncle Mathias perhaps may have been caught in the turmoil.
I would be very grateful for any help.
Thanks you in advance.
John Sagartz
