Here's a little poem, which reflects to our Heimat tragedy.

Wir mussten die Heimat verlassen,
Denn hinter uns hetzte der Tod.
Wir wandelten eiskalte Strassen,
Und assen ein kummervolles Brot.

Nun schleichen die freudlosen Tage,
Im Lager so eintönig bin,
Und jeden bedrückt oft die Frage,
Nach solch eines Daseins Sinn.
---------------
Forced to forsake our homeland,
Harried by importunate Death,
We trudged on ice-cold roads,
And ate our grief-stained bread.

Now in the camp drab and drear,
Our days drag on joyless indeed.
All are oppressed by the sheer,
Meaningless life we now lead.
H.F.

Dear Hans: Thank you for speaking in behalf of all of us who miss our
hometown, our "Heimat" even after all those many years. Christmas time is
always hard for me because I lost my mother at age nine and my father died
in WWII. In 1945, in the Lager Gakowa, I experienced my first Christmas as
an orphan and since then, that is a sad time for me.

But, we must go on with our children and grandchildren and yet, never
forget those who loved us many years ago.

Hi to every one, DVHH volunteers and friends.

The word Heimat was mentioned recently. Especially during the holiday season
we often reflect back to a time long ago with memories. For many of us
survivors of the tragic post war years it is often very difficult especially
when you hear "Silent Night, Holy Night" and tears flow freely from our
eyes.

Heimat? What does it mean to me? I was expelled from my home town on March
15th 1945. I was one of many in the death camp of Gakowa and became a
survivor. I fled with my family to Hungary on April the 12th 1947 where we
lived till August 15th of 1947 and fled to Austria where I lived till June
the 7th of 1956. I landed in New York on June 18th came to Cleveland on June
21st where I live ever since.

Since the day I was expelled from my home town in Batschsentiwan, I have
asked the question many times. What is Heimat? Is it a place to rest your
head after a days work? I may surprise many of you for I have to say, I have
never felt the very same feeling of Heimat as I have in Batschsentiwan even
there only for the relative short time of 9 years.

It is like as a piece was torn out of my hart and never found its way back.

Heimat is when you can go home to the house of your mother and father and
you are greeted with a gently loving smile gleaming from your mothers face
and her eyes light up like stars in a bright sky and she takes you in her
arms which makes everything in this world all right.

Heimat is when your father broken body walks' toward you and waves from the
distance as he moves slowly toward you since this is the fastest he can move
now and then stretches out his still dirty hands he quickly wipes on his
pants and clumsily clutches you in his arms.

Heimat is when you can go to the church you where baptized and say a prayer,
meet your school friends and even your old sweetheart to give her a special
hug.

All this is gone now forever.

Heimat now is where you finally come home to your children and
grandchildren.

In our familiar mother tongue we say "der Heim is der Heim und wans hinrem
Ofe is" Home is home and even if it is behind the oven. O! I wish to have
this feeling again like then in "Der Heimat" a long time ago.

I wish you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy New Year and may God
bless you and may you find that most cherished feeling of "Heimat" you long
for.

Thank you Peter, and also Heinrich Stephan. This sounds like a very
interesting project to be exhibited in Ulm in 2008. I hope some of our
subscribers who lived through this time period and have vivid recollections
will consider participation.

May I ask, if anyone can tell me why the village of Kübekhausen near Beba
Vechi does not show on recent maps of Romania. Dr. Arnold Marchang of the
HOG Keglewichhausen in answering questions about my pictures, which needed
explanation, told me that the spouse of one of my Great-Aunts a man by the
name of Loch (married to Kati Hockl) came from Kübekhausen? I had to go to
some older maps to find this community?

Thank you all so very much, Happy New Year & may God Bless,

Is it possible that is the German name and, therefore, won't be on the map?

John,
KubekHausen is just inside the Hungarian border, across from Beba Veche,
Romania. Try this; it might work for you (if not, try Googling the word
Kubekhaza):
