The prohibition wasn't exclusively Donauschwaben. My sainted Irish Mother
frequently chastised me with "a whistling girl and a crowing hen always come
to some bad end".

As she explained it to me -- if a girl/woman did things that were "man
things" she wouldn't be acceptable to society (male or female) just as the
hen that crowed might be mistaken for a rooster and culled from the flock.
