There are some good introductory tutorials at the DNA Heritage website, for example this one is a general tutorial:

and this one discusses SNPs and haplogroups with some easy to follow pictures (ignore the 'masterclass' tag!).

If you can follow that, all you need to know in addition is that this mailing list discusses a lower level SNP that occurs within R1b which we now call M222. There are some other longer names for it but they keep changing. M222 is quite 'new' in relative terms but still a lot older than anyone's traditional paper trail genealogy.
