It certainly is highly unlikely that every mutation is reversed. Given that
M222+ is thought to be only about 60 generations old, it's probable that
more mutations have retained their new mutated value than have reversed.

I'm not aware of any evidence that particular markers drift in particular
directions (ie more up than down say).

I don't think it's correct to say that DYS390, DYS385b and DYS392 define the
M222+ population. It's the SNP mutation M222 that does that. What is true is
that the values at DYS390, DYS385b and DYS392 are useful 'predictors' of
whether a haplotype, untested for SNP's, is M222+.

I assume that to be helpful, there is a drift in the STR's values i.e. at
least some STR are unlikely to revert back to the form value.



So which STR's show the most drift and which way? For I assume that the
drift that has occured in DYS-390, 385b and 392 defines the M222 population?
