We already have two self-funded participants. That means it is their DNA
to be checked. They surely won't pay $750 to check someone else's DNA.
That is the reason I've been following this Walk on the Y initiative. I
learned through Pat Tagart that an M222 had sprung for the test on his own.
This did not come about as the result of discussions on this list or in the
M222 project.
That is also the reason I've been testing the waters for a possible third
candidate. Both self-funded candidates are from Ireland. I think what
we'd all like to find is some kind of Nial vs. pre-Nial split but that might
be just wishful thinking. There are tribes in Ireland said to be pre-Nial
(the Connechta). The Megonigell samples (sp?) is most likely "Nial" DNA
(Cenel Conaill from Donegal). The Mannion sample is from Galway, said to
derive from the Soghan or Soghan tribe, which most historians think is a very
old tribal group. I think some even think they were Cruithin. Like the
Connachta, it could be pre-Nial.
Personally, given what we have now, if I had a third candidate to chose
from I'd pick one of the Scottish surnames. I wouldn't have any problems
with the McCord sample. Or an Ewing. As long as they're pretty distant from
the Irish samples.
But I also don't know if testing a third candidate would tell us more
than the two who have already volunteered. They might find nothing but a few
new SNPs that further subdivide L21. Pat Tagart is really pushing this
test (I think) because unlike M222 which has its own SNP, the other L21
clusters he's interested in including his own Scot modal are not currently
defined by an SNP. One M222 test might be sufficient for this.
