Subject: [R-M222] Walk on the Y Project

I think I mentioned this before but we have two M222 project members
interested in the Walk on the Y project. The surnames are Megonnigil and
Mannion. Both are from Ireland. The Megonnigils are probably from Donegal; the
Mannion sample is from Galway. Both have been SNP tested.

One of the ambitions of this project is to uncover new SNPS. It is
possible some kind of sub-clade dividing SNP could be found through the test. Of
course it could also just find some new SNPs further subdividing L21 as a
whole.

Megonnigil is mostly probably McGonagle, a Donegal surname. It's also
probably Cenel Conaill, or descended from a son of Nial. The Mannion sample
is from Galway. As such it's probably Connachta of some kind, or
descended from alleged brothers of Nial. I don't think any of us know exactly what
this surname represents but it should be different from the likely Cenel
Conaill origin of the Megonnigils.

Since the two most prevalent locations for this DNA are Ireland and
Scotland it would be of value to have a Scottish participant if one is
interested. The test is expensive ($750). In our ccgg project we pooled resources
with various members chipping in about $25 to cover the cost for one test.
That could also be done for a Scottish participant in the Walk on the Y
Project if anyone felt like organizing a drive. You'd just have to pick an
M222 candidate with definite roots in Scotland (Dunbars and Ewings come to
mind). Funds can be deposited into the general fund at the FTDNA M222
Project to pay for the test.

I have an application form for the test if anyone is interested.

You could also pick some geographically outlying samples from Norway,
France or Germany.

Others may have ideas on a third subject to test. If so fire away. The
test may find something or it may not. If any new SNPS are found, even what
may be private ones, FTDNA has said it will later test for those at
reasonable prices.
