Subject: [R-M222] M222 Project Totals
Date: Sun, 19 Apr 2009 00:54:22 EDT
I worked through most of the M222 project checking origins for the surnames
with 37 marker or better tests.
Australia (1) This is an Irish surname (Reilly)
China (1) This surname is probably McKenzie
England (18)
France (1)
Germany (3)
Ireland (214)
N. Ireland (15)
Norway (1)
Scotland (.71)
Spain (1)
U.S. (1) probably Scottish - Alexander
UK (14)
Unknown (90)
Wales (1)
I made no attempt to adjust these totals based on surnames. N. Ireland
mostly seems to be code for "I think I'm Scottish." Some obviously Scottish
surnames such as the Ewings and Duncans are listed as "Ireland." There
were 433 haplotypes so 20.7% listed unknown origins. The Ireland section is
probably also over weighted by the large number of samples from Dohertys,
McLaughlins and Beirnes.
Most of the Cowans in the project claimed an origin in Ireland. I think
two said Scotland. Since Cowan and Cowen are also common names in Ireland I
could not say if these are Irish or Scottish. There are lots of them all
over the place in Ireland in the Griffith's Valuations, a lot in Galway.
I used the "report" function in the FTDNA page to compare the entire 37
marker set to the one person in the project what matched the M222 modal
perfectly. (Nollaig MacKenzie). The GDs ranged from 1 to 10 for the great
majority of project members. There are only seven samples with GDs higher than
10. Two at eleven (Bonner, Dunn). Two at twelve (McHughen, Spier). One
thirteen (Brennan). One fourteen (Burgess). One fifteen (Conroy).
For the entire project, the totals look like this:
0 GD (1)
1 GD (9)
2 GD (22)
3 GD (37)
4 GD (72)
5 GD (61)
6 GD (77)
7 GD (51)
8 GD (53)
9 GD (28)
10 GD (15)
11 GD (2)
12 GD (2)
13 GD (1)
14 GD (1)
15 GD (1)
I'm not sure that these totals aren't about what I posted previously.
Most come in between 4-8 GD.
The individual totals in England are:
4 GD (4)
5 GD (2)
6 GD (4)
7 GD (4)
8 GD (1)
9 GD (2)
10 GD (1)
Not really much different from the project as a whole as far as I can tell.
Germany
3 GD (1)
6 GD (1)
9 GD (1)
France
6 GD (1)
Spain
7 GD (1)
Norway
6 GD (1)
Wales
4 GD (1)
Scotland
0 GD (1)
1 GD (2)
2 GD (3)
3 GD (6)
4 GD (13)
5 GD (9)
6 GD (5)
7 GD (8)
8 GD (15)
9 GD (4)
10 GD (4)
Ireland
1 GD (6)
2 GD (11)
3 GD (17)
4 GD (37)
5 GD (31)
6 GD (37)
7 GD (22)
8 GD (27)
9 GD (14)
10 GD (4)
11 GD (2)
12 GD (2)
13 GD (1)
14 GD (1)
15 GD (1)
The four most distant samples in the entire project are Conroy, Burgess,
Brennan, McHughen and Spier.
Two of these are probably Irish (Conroy, Brennan). Burgess is probably
English or Scottish as is Spier (Speer, Spear). I can't find anything like
McHughen listed in my Irish surname book. It could be a corrupt form of
McKeown (Scottish) or some other name.
