Interesting analysis. I've wondered about DYS 458 = 18 myself. That
occurs very strongly in the Doherty and McLaughlin samples. In fact it's modal
in both although not every sample has it. I do see it popping up here and
there in other M222 surname groupings, in Griersons, Dunbars, and other
surnames. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or evidence of something
else.
Another marker value prevalent in M222 is DYS 391 = 10. In Ireland that
seems to be found mostly in the Breifne clans of Connacht, descended from
Brian, one of the alleged half-brothers of Nial.(ORourkes, O'Reillys,
McGovrns)
I did a rough count of a few recurring shared markers in M222. I'll try
and get a better count later.
DYS 390 = 24 (37)
DYS 391 = 10 (61)
DYS 458 = 18 (90)
I looked up the surname Grierson in the surname profiler. It's heaviest
concentration is in Galloway but generally across the Scottish lowlands.
Grier is also very heavy in Galloway but appears more heavily in Argyllshire
than the Grierson variant. Dunbar also appears heavily in Galloway and the
lowland regions but it's highest concentration is in the north.
Many of these names occur so generally throughout Scotland it's difficult
to say anything about a place of origin.
