It would appear that the Byrne M222 group may have emerged between 1036 AD
and 1387 AD, possibly about the time surnames became common. I realize
that "may" and "possibly" are the key words though.

Isn't that about what we'd expect from a related group with a common
ancestor who arose as a distinct sept at about the time of surnames? I'll have
to run my own Donegal McLaughlin samples (about 21) through the spreadsheet
and see what happens. I can also run the related Dohertys through the
spreadsheet.

In the case of the McLaughlins of Donegal, their common ancestor was a
man named Lochlan who lived ca. 1023. The exact date is not known but the
first MacLochlainn on record appears in the annals circa 1050 and died in
1064. He is considered the first MacLochlainn (son of Lochlan). But that's
not the whole story. According to the O'Clery genealogies, every
Mclaughlin living in Donegal ca. 1600 was descended from one man who appeared later
in this line (sl. 1241 AD). The Dohertys have a similar genealogy
deducing every Doherty alive ca. 1600 from one man who lived in about 1300 AD.
The O'Byrnes of Connacht may have something similar.

If the pedigrees are true it means every MacLochlainn in descent from
Ardgar MacLochlainn went extinct in the period 1050 to 1240 except for the
line of one man, Domhnall MacLochlainn, sl. 1241. The next earliest
branching point in this line to which a surname is attached are the O'Neills of
Ulster - and here we have all kinds of difficulties because the largest group
of O'Neills in Ulster are not M222. They are twice the size of the M222
O'Neills in the Trinity database.
