"I think Argyll and NE Ireland were the same 'place' for quite a while."

I can give you a modern day example of that. Some years ago, I visited Rathlin Island off the coast of Northern Ireland. While discussing the closeness of the Hebrides to Rathlin with a resident, he mentioned that a man from Colonsay often visited Rathlin in his sailboat. He was quite astonished when I said, correctly, "you must be referring to Kevin Byrne."
Kevin is a member of my project, and a few years later I decided to visit him on Colonsay. It took quite some planning to get to Oban to connect to the twice-weekly ferry to Colonsay, and it required a two day stay on what today is an isolated island that, centuries ago, was an easy sail from Ireland. Of course, it still is, if you have a boat.
