Hi John

How many markers did you use?

Sandy

Subject: [R-M222] Genetic Distance/Diversity

I went through the entire M222 project plotting GDs against the M222 modal
from the McGee Utility.

0 (1)
1 (10)
2 (22)
3 (46)
4 (76)
5 (60)
6 (75)
7 (53)
8 (42)
9 (7)
10 (6)
11 (1)

I don't know how others would interpret this but the main cluster of the
group appears to come in at between 4-6 GDs against the M222 modal. This
group
includes several large surname groups (Doherty, Ewing and McLaughlin) plus
some smaller ones (Dunbar, McCord, Cowan, Duncan) and a lot of singletons.

In a previous check of Dohertys, Mclaughlins and Ewings the GDs against the

same modal were:

McLaughlins 5-6
Dohertys 6-7
Ewings 7-8

Ewings GDs from the project

6 (2)
7 (4)
8 (12)
9 (2)
10 (2)

For most of the other surnames in the project (singletons) it isn't
possible
to say much.

McCord

3 (2)
4 (2)
5 (1)
6 (2)
8 (1)
9 (1)

Duncan

2 (1)
8 (1)

Dunbar

6 (2)
7 (3)
8 (3)

I simply do not see a lot of diversity here. And nothing that can be
localized on a geographical basis (Ireland vs. Scotland vs. England). For
most
surnames it's impossible to tell anything.

There are a lot of M222 Duncans on Ysearch.

Duncan (Ysearch)

7 (2)
8 (9)
9 (6)
10 (2)

Three other Duncans are so remote (14,15,16 GDS) I can't believe they're
related even though all are M222.

The Duncans and Ewings seem a little more distant from the modal than the
McLaughlins and Dohertys. Both are thought to be Scottish in origin. But
I
can't say much just based on this. We might be able to tell more if we had

more samples for both Irish and Scottish surnames.

John
