However what is evidence for the low percentage of M222+ plus amongst the
Southern Ui Neill?

Bernard, I based that on my own attempts to locate southern Ui Neill DNA.
Trinity did not address the subject nor did it include many or any southern Ui
Neill surnames in their study. I personally have been able to find little
or no southern Ui Neill DNA based on the names of chieftains in the pedigrees
and Topographical Poems. I think part of the problem might be that the
southern Ui Neill chieftain surnames for some reason do not seem as distinct as
the NW Irish. Most could have multiple origins in Ireland so how do you really
know what you have in a sample?

One of the best surnames should be O Mailsechlainn, but as I've explained, I
can find no McLaughlin samples tied to the midlands in our DNA project. We
do have some unknown M222 McLaughlins but some say they're from Scotland. We
have a lot of unknown plain R1b McLaughlin samples.

In contrast, M222 DNA samples pop up everywhere you look in NW Ireland and
Connacht.

Maybe there are some M222 southern Ui Neill samples on Ysearch but they just
haven't been identified yet? That might be an interesting project that
could help fill a void.
