John, I get the distinct feeling your trying to nudge us in that direction
and rightfully so.
I plead guilty. But my intent really is just to present alternatives. .
In addition to the comments by David Wilson re-posted yesterday by Sandy in
another post he was careful to point out that the TRMCA estimates for M222
did not necessarily reflect the true age of the first man with the M222
mutation. it could, he said, be much older than the 1,500 BP date plus or minus a
few centuries. I think he furthermore stated it was impossible to know how
old the mutation was.
<On a different note, I remember someone mentioning an M222 named Galyean a
few weeks ago and lo and behold, I found a namesake? (Galeine) on the same
ship as a possible Brittany relative of mine, Jean Lemenach on a vessel in 1720
heading for the "country" of Louisiana.
http://bd.archivescanadafrance.org/acf/doc.xsp?&fmt=tab&id=FRAD017_000000005_de-221 Lots of M222s on the
continent. Could they all be descended from the NW of Ireland or was their a
split, the mass progenitor to Ireland and a few of us left on the continent?
If the original ancestor of M222 lived much earlier than 500 AD. then John
McEwan could be right with his own 3,000 year estimates - and now we'd be
looking at 1,500 BC. or so. As Alan pointed out in his post there isn't any
evidence that this man lived in Ireland. What if he lived in Britain or Gaul?
How then might we interpret the M222 matches on the continent, England and
Scotland (not to mention Denmark, Germany and Sweden)?
There was some discussion of the Galyean sample on the GEN-DNA list when
M222 first became a hot topic. I think he said he thought his ancestors came
from somewhere in England but he wasn't sure. It sure does appear to be a
French surname. I see four samples on Ysearch and they seem to match.
BMJ4B Gallion
PZBYY Galyean
SWS3J Galyean
H2M2Z Galyen
Two list a Shadrack Galyean as ancestor.
