John, on the subject on Niall of the Nine Hostages modal. Are there families names clustered near this central modal (i.e. DYS values) and others like the Ewings who are clustered at a distance from it?
As for Connacht, when was it named for the Connachta? I understand the older versions name is Cóiced Ol nEchmacht the land of Fir Ol nEchmacht an was so called until the early historic era (c.5th-7th centuries A.D.). The province change name due I understand due to the rise of Connachta, however when was this? I half remember that it is only during the time of the O'Connors did the region and the Connachta become important on the Irish political stage? and that the O'Connors were an Ui Neill political creation to balance the O'Briens? who where yet another Ui Neill political creation to undermine Eoghanacht power?
Thanks,
