John,
I think David Wilson estimated that M222 appeared about 500 AD, and John Ewan thought 1300 BC, but wasn't there another estimate in between--a time closer to Christ?
If the Ui Neill, Ui Fiachrach, and Ui Briuin branched off from their common ancestor Echach Muidhmedhoin (aka Eochaid or Echu Mugmedon) somewhere around 300-400 AD, each branch carrying M222 with it, then it would seem that M222 began (or first appeared in Ireland) where ever Echach Muidhmedhoin and his immediate ancestors lived. This presumably was Cruachu (Rathcroghan) which dates back to the Iron Age and was well established in Echach's time as the Connachta center. Byrne suggested that the Ui Neill left from Cruachu to go north through Sligo to conquer Donegal.
