"Wasn't Cruachan (Rathcroghan) in Roscommon the ancient capitol of the
Connachta clans?"
I was wondering about Carbury (Caipre) in north Sligo, but you probably are right. Cruachan is mentioned in the Tain Bo Cuilange as the royal Connacht seat. The timing of the Tain supposedly was about the time of Christ, and though the versions we know come from medieval documents, surely the scribes had no reason to invent an early origin for Cruachan. But whether King Ailill was M222 (Queen Medb could not have been of course) is not stated.
