One of the members of the M222 project (Jeff Lane) put together a
tentative timeline for developments in M222 research. I posted it on my
R1b1c7 site:
http://clanmaclochlainn.com/R1b1c7/timeline.htm
I'm sure there are errors and omissions to be corrected. But I thought
it was a good starting point.
One of the areas I think needs some work are the TMRCA estimates. In
the timeline we have John McEwan's early work (which he states was based
on ASD) giving a TMRCA of about 1350 BC. David Wilson posted recently
he thought the TMRCA was about 1,500 to 2,000 years BP or from 500 AD.
to 0 AD although he did say the M222+ common ancestor could be much
older than that.
If most M222+ living today are descended from a common ancestor circa
0 AD. (to chose the earlier date) than that is not far from the time of
Nial. The problem is we only have murky pedigrees for Nial's ancestors.
O'Rahilly accepts his father, Eochaidh Mughmedoin, as an historical
character but distrusts most of the earlier names in the pedigree,
including Conn 'of the Hundred Battles', who he says was the ancestral
god of the northern goidels. The earliest name in the pedigree he
concedes as probably historical is Tuathal Teachmar, whom Irish sources
claim lived ca. 200 A.D. or as early as 135 AD. Beyond that we know
nothing.
