< However, I could not find a geographic pattern. The most frequest
names having 390=24 are Burgess (8), Burns/Byrne/Beirne (7), Ferguson
(4), Galyean (3), and Ford (3). The Irish Times surname site
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm places Burgess in east
Ulster as immigrants, Ferguson in Down/Antrim/Tyrone, and has no
suggestions for Galyean. Ford, the anglicization of several gaelic names
in south and north Connaught is the only that might help, but one name
does not a pattern make.
Paul, I'm finding that to be true of most markers where we find a lot of
matches in M222. There's a whole series of 13-25-14-10 but no obvious
connection between any of the samples. Some one else recently mentioned
11-12 at 385ab. DYS 458 = 18 appears heavily in Dohertys and
Mclaughlins; but also in Dunbars and I know of no connection between
these families.
Despite repeated attempts I see nothing but individual family markers
in the M222 project. I have samples for Gallaghers, O'Donnells and
O'Dohertys, three septs said to be Cenel Conaill in descent from Nial.
Yet I see nothing that ties them together as related except for the
obvious M222 pattern. The Gallaghers and O'Dohertys both have some
unique family modal markers. The O'Donnell samples are so poor (mostly
12 marker) that I can't say much about them.
At this point I do not think there is anything unique to Niall's DNA
that might show up in clans said to descend from him in Ireland. The O
Cathains of Ulster were one of the closest kin to the McLaughlins within
the Cenel Eoghain but there is nothing I can see that says they are
related more closely than to anyone else in the project. I do see some
close links between O'Dohertys (Cenel Conaill) and McLaughlins (Cenel
Eoghain) but that might be due to living side by side for centuries in
the same small part of Donegal (Inishowen peninsula). You might be able
to put that down to NPEs over the centuries.
