Hi John

Any ideas on what, if anything, this means?

This is a question perhaps better directed at David Ewing than myself.
But I see no particular closeness in the two families except for a 13 at
DYS 439.

Perhaps I should have phrased my question differently.

Would the O Cathains had any family links to Aodh Athlaman or Aodh Alain?

I agree that there's nothing obvious at first glance other than 13 at DYS
439.

I think that's due in part to the fact that the Ewing modal is so distinct
from the Ui Niall modal that almost everything looks different to the Ewing
modal.

However, if you take all 37 marker haplotypes from the M222+ project,
determine their GD's from the Ewing modal, sort on GD, then exclude Ewings
(who are obviously close to the Ewing modal), you find

Dougherty6
Slavens7
Washington7
Paterson7
Scism7
Trott7
Muckian7
Cowan x 47
Foley7
Hale7
Bryson7
Mackenzie7
Manees7
McConnell7
McLaughlin7
Wilson 7
Morrison7
Reed7
O'Byrne7
Wight Le Rossi7
McAfee7

Plus more.

Of the above, Slavens, Scism and Muckian are in the Ulster heritage O
Cathain group.

If you then take the above, plus those with a GD of 8 and look only at names
that appear 2 or more times you get

Dougherty or variant3
McLaughlin or variant5
Cowan or variant11
McGonigall or variant3

I'm not sure whether the above means a whole lot, but I think it provides
some clues.

Out of interest, Cowans are modal at 31 for DYS 449, one of the five
distinctive Ewing markers.

I'd say the chances are quite good that the Ewings and the Cowans are fairly
closely related, for the following reasons :

1. Both name derivations thought to be from MacEoghain
2. Both groups a solid number of M222+
3. Both modal at DYS 449 = 31
4. Cowans are the closest surname to Ewing in GD terms with a relatively
large number of participants.

Aren't we back to the Anradan theory on this question? Ewing =
MacEwan of Otter? Is the chain of inference O Cathain (Ui Neill) =
Ewing = MacEwan of Otter and therefore Lamont, Maclachlan and
MacSweeney, the well known Anradan kindred?

I don't see it myself.
