Subject: [R-M222] Ashley cousin Queen Anne beheaded as guilty of _adultery
Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2008 06:57:15 EST

In late 1532, Anne gave in to Henry and soon became pregnant. The two were
secretly married on 25 January 1533. However, because the child was
conceived
before Anne and Henry were legitimately wed (as the marriage itself was
technically not legal; Henry was already married, and when bigamy occurs the

second marriage is not seen as legally binding), the child was considered a
bastard. To make the imminent birth legitimate, _Thomas Cranmer_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cranmer) declared the marriage of
Henry and Anne to be
valid. In September 1533 she gave birth to a girl, the future Queen
_Elizabeth I
of England_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_I_of_England) . She
failed to produce a surviving male heir. Despite unconvincing evidence
against
her, she was condemned and beheaded as guilty of _adultery
The Childhood of Princess Elizabeth - Kat Ashley
Lady Margaret Bryan was replaced with a new governess for Elizabeth. Her
name was Katharine Champernowne. In 1545 Katherine Champernowne later
married a
distant cousin of Anne Boleyn called John Ashley. She therefore became
related to Elizabeth through marriage which strengthened their close ties.
She was
commonly known by the name of Kat Ashley. Kat came from Devon and was a
well
educated, loving and affectionate governess. Kat was completely devoted to
Elizabeth. Elizabeth came to love Kat dearly and she played an important
role
in her life as a friend and confidante. Elizabeth praised Kat’s early
devotion
to her studies by stating that she took “great labor and pain in bringing
of
me up in learning and honesty”.When her mother was executed, Elizabeth's
household (she was given her own household, as befits a Princess) was thrown
into disarray. Henry was preoccupied with his new wife, Jane Seymour, and there
was nobody to take a close interest in Elizabeth. Lady Margaret Bryan was her
governess, and wrote to her father that she was outgrowing her dresses when
she, like her half-sister Mary, were declared illegitimate. Blanche Parry was
one of her nurses, and supposedly taught her Welsh.

When Elizabeth was four years old, she was assigned to the care of Catherine
Champernowne, who married John Ashley. This lady was known as Kat Ashley,
and became utterly devoted to the young Princess. She made sure Elizabeth had a
good education, with tutors like Roger Ascham.

Anthony Ashley Cooper
Lord (Earl) Shaftsbury, Anthony Ashley Cooper 1621-1683 was son of daughter
of Anthony Ashley (secretary of War for Queen Elizbeth I) (and so the double
name but he IS a Cooper) and John Cooper.

Brit Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Chancellor.

Famous for running the Brit government during the 1670's and beginning of
the 1680's , he passed the first habeas corpus act - beginning due process and
ending the practice of jailing someone without a hearing; and he also passed
an act to make the judiciary independent, beginning that important practice.

He was also Lord Proprietor (with 7 others) of the Carolina's - today's US
North and South Carolina but extending on the west to the Pacific Ocean. And
on the committtees running the Virginia and Massachusetts colonies.

Esp famous too for accumulating wealth, he had at one time 40 men in livery
to attend on guests at his parties.

Falling out with others in mid 1680's , he spent some time in the Tower of
London , with false charges, and on release left to live until his death a
short time later (1683) in Amsterdam, Holland....

His family continues prominent in UK today, with each succeeding Earl of
Shaftsbury with the same name of Anthony Ashley Cooper. The one in this position
in the 1800's was esp successful in passing child labor laws stopping sweat
shops using children.

The family today remains esp involved in philanthropy.

Queen Elizabeth II is descended from this family.
