Interesting article on the founder of Mormonism, and another example of a
person of Irish descent with high verbal fluency aka "the gift of the gab"!
In Ireland generally people whose Lastname (surname) is Smith can be either
of Irish or English descent and more often Catholic, while those with the
variant spelling Smyth or Smythe are invariably of English descent and more
likely to be non-Catholic. In the US of course it would be more likely to
call all of these Anglo surnames, whatever their original derivation.

The Irish (Gaelic) for "Smith" is "Gabhan" and thus descendants of smiths
would be McGabhan, with variant spellings:
MacGabhan
McGabhann
MacGabhann
MacGowan
McGowan - Like Shane McGowan - lead singer of the Pogues
MacGown
McGown
Gowan
Cowan - Like Brian Cowan - Irish Prime Minister (aka Taoiseach) from the
Laois/Offaly area
Gowing - Cousins of mine from Laois/Offaly area
Going
Goings

Cheers,
Paul
