Did the rise to prominence of the O'Kanes pre- or post-date the hypothetical
spawning of Anradans?
The O'Kanes of Ulster were a late rising family (sometime ca. 1200 AD. or
later). They were part of a Cenel Eoghain tribe called Clan Conor of Magh
Ith, who prior to that date had four other chieftains noted in the manuscripts.
Sometime around or before 1200 A.D. the Clan Conor lost their territory to
the O'Donnells of the Cenel Conaill (kings of Tirconnell). At a somewhat
later date (I can't say exactly when) the O'Kanes popped up in L'Derry county
with a pedigree linking them to the Clan Conor. From then on they were noted
sub-chieftains of the O'Neills of Tyrone.
<If you look at the O Cathains at the O'Kane site, you'll see that 13 for
DYS439 is very common, in fact you could call it modal. If you then look at
Ewings, you find the same thing
439 = 13 isn't modal for the Donegal McLaughlins. They differ from the
R1b1c7 modal at three main markers, DYS 458 = 18; DYS 447 = 24; DYS 576 = 17.
Where that gets a little interesting is a fair amount of Dohertys (Cenel
Conaill) also share some of the same markers. Both are descendants of Nial.
David Ewing is on this list. I'd ask him about the O'Kane and Ewing
similarity.
There is a well-known legend that the chieftain of the McDonalds c. 1400 or
later married an O Cathain bride from Ireland. As part of her marriage
retinue she is said to have brought with her men from every surname in O
Cathain's territory in Ulster, many of whom were said to have founded families in
Scotland. Whether there is any truth to this legend is unknown but it is
repeated in both the Book of Clanranald and in Hugh McDonald's 17th century history
of the McDonalds.
