<What do the Scottish families, who claim descent from O'Neills, (the
Anradan kindred) show in this regard ?
So far the results don't look promising for the Anradan kindred (Lamonts,
MacSweeneys, Maclachlans, Lamonts, McEwans). Their pedigree, the earliest
version of which appears in the Books of Ballymote and Lecan (c. 400 AD) both
claim a descent from Aodh Athlaman, the ancestor of the O'Neills.
My question is which O'Neills? The R1b1c7 O'Neills or the main group of
O'Neills who match some McShanes? The DNA I've seen for possible Anradan
descendants in Scotland is mostly not R1b1c7 and so far I haven't seen any that
matches the O'Neills/McShane variety. We don't really know yet what the DNA
is of the Maclachlans of Scotland except it appears not to be R1b1c7 and so
far I've seen no Lamonts who are R1b1c7. About half of the Irish MacSweeneys
are R1b1c7. No MacEwens are R1b1c7.
<I've read that Anradan's father could have been either Aedh Athlamanh
d.1033 or in another tradition Aedh Alainn d.1047 (per Skene) ...?
That's a blunder of some kind by Skene. Aedh Athlaman and Aedh Alainn are
one and the same person (Athlaman is angicised as Allan - see O Ceallaigh's
article on the O'Neills). There was no Aedh Alainn listed in any of the annals
who d. 1047. I've looked. Aedh Athlaman however appears at his death in
1033.
This was taken seriously at the time mainly because there is another Aedh
Alainn is some versions of the pedigrees who is clearly different from Aedh
Athlaman. In some he is called Aedh Alainn renabarta Buirc (or Aedh Alainn also
called Buirc).
If you really want to stir the pot look at the Lamont pedigree in the
infamous Gaelic MS. of Skene.
Genelach Clann Ladus .....Robert ic ...... ic Eoin ic
Gillacolm ic ...... mc Gilleasp ic Ferchair mc Dunsleibe ic
Buirc ic Anradan ic Gilleabeirt rig eilan Sidir ic Muredag ic
.... ic Domnaill ic Jamar.a.r. mc Martan Donn mc Neillgusa
Aberice.
Ferchair m. Dunsleibe m. Buirc m. Anradan....
But who the heck is the Gilleabeirt king of the western Sudreys? Who was
Neillgusa of Aberice (Lochaber)?
